The driver spoke up in an unknown accent, "We're out of gas." He smiled in embarrassment. It caused butterflies in Candy's stomach. His lips were full and Candy found herself wondering what they tasted like. He had light brown hair, worn short and spiky and was sporting a days worth of stubble across his chin. Although he was extremely attractive, it wasn't his rakish good looks that got to Candy, it was his green eyes.
"Outta gas? That's an awful strange name." Candy joked. "My name's Candy. Not a strange name, more like a cruel joke. I guess Mamma thought that if she gave me that name I'd turn out sweet." She leaned closer to him and whispered, "Didn't work though!"
He laughed. "Actually the name's Trevor. My friends and I are out of gas and it appears the station's closed. Do you know where we might be able to fill up?"
She extended her hand to shake his. "'Fraid you've run into a patch of bad luck at the moment. The next station's in town, about 12 miles away. Who're your friends?" He shook her hand and electric shocks ran through her arm and into her body, even after they had ceased to touch. The man next to Trevor looked like a Viking. Even seated he towered above the others. His barrel chest, blond hair and blue eyes did nothing to bely that image.
Trevor pointed to the Viking and said, "This is Steve," and then towards the backseat, "that's Scotty and Paul. We're lost, too." Candy shook their hands as each was introduced. Scotty had dark hair and piercing blue eyes. He was probably a huge hit with the ladies and he looked like he knew it. Paul had blond hair and brown eyes with pouty lips that looked a bit too practiced to be natural. He would have been stunning to look at if the air of arrogance about him hadn't been so completely overpowering.
"Are you going to help us or not?" Paul asked impatiently.
Candy pulled herself onto the side of the car, crossed her legs and folded her hands neatly into her lap. "Paul," she began sweetly. "Before you start charming the folks around here with your winning ways allow me to set you straight. Mine is one of the few houses in this area without dogs running loose and I know all my neighbors pretty well. You might not want to go making an enemy out of me just yet. Maybe you should just call triple-A. There ain't no cell phone service round here, but if you walk about 5 miles down the road you'll see a dirt path on the right that goes up a hill. Go to the top of that hill and you should be able to make yourself a call. I wouldn't wait too long to start, though. The critters'll be coming out soon and that's likely to scare the dickens out of you city fellas." She slid off the car and began to walk away.
"You stupid yobbo!" Steve said to him as he climbed out of the car and raced after Candy. "I apologize for me mate, Paul. He didn't mean to be rude. We're all just hot, lost and pissed off since we ran out of gas."
Candy was getting a kink in her neck from looking up at him. "They're lucky to have a friend like you. Tell them all to hurry up and we'll walk back to the house." It was kind of funny watching the expression on his face as his eyes got really wide. "It's not THAT far!" She laughed. These men might work out every day, but they acted like they never walked further than a parking lot. "Okay, boys. We'd better get along now. I'm wilting in this heat like a wallflower at a spring fling." She led the way, walking along the white line on the side of the highway.
